I really enjoyed the way this unsophisticated woman handled herself when confronted with the attempts against her life. Who sees the silver lining in every cloud? Neither Lady Agatha nor Emily had been brought up on this order of literature, nor in an atmosphere in which it was accepted without reservation. As well throw the book across the room on the grounds that it presents such a vivid picture of male chauvinism and a rigid class structure. A man, a sheepdog, a nice boy: what are we intended to make of this? It is always good to see a young woman in a historical novel rise from the working class to nobility.
The novel introduced me to lovely people who weren't featured in the movie, such as the Cupps and Agatha. A man, a sheepdog, a nice boy: what are we intended to make of this? In like fashion, cold, self-centered Walderhurst found himself in love with Emily because she so absolutely loved him. September 18, I was inspired to read this book after watching the movie.
Though she was not aware of the fact, her fears, her simplicity, and her timorous adoration of her husband had not allowed her to reason normally in the past.
The book was originally written in two parts and published in magazines separately. I forgot. They were people of excellent family, but had quite enough to do to keep their sons in the army or navy and find husbands for their daughters. I really love the cover of the Persephone Classics edition, pictured here.
The novel shows a very touching scene when Lord Waldenhurst says Emily's name over and over, and she, even in her unconscious state, is compelled to respond to the person calling to her.
MrsLee Dec 15, Curious tale. I got to the end of the first volume, but I didn't bother reading the second. Burnett's early life was no fairy tale so her stories have a firm basis in hard reality which is appealing and believable. The Making of a Marchioness was written in by a sharp eyed observer of her times.
Persephone titles like this one make me think a lot. I got to the end of the first volume, but I didn't bother reading the second. Both concern Emily Fox-Seton, initially a badly paid dogsbody who struggles to pay her rent.
We know this man: self-absorbed, emotionally illiterate, and with a streak of cruelty. This was my first purchase of a Persephone book and I love the size, feel, and look of these publications.
